Name of Project: Car or Bicycle? A Comparison of the means of transportation in Curitiba
Description of Project: In the midst of today’s chaotic scenery of the largest urban centers, the population’s mode of locomotion is soon to become one of the most decisive matters for life quality in these places - specially in Brazil, a country that is going through a deep economic, social and cultural transformation. Urban mobility is by any way restricted to motorized means such as cars, motorcycles or subways - nor even movement quality restricts to them. To describe the pros and cons of the various means of transportation available in Curitiba, a major capital in south of Brazil, arises the Intermodal Challenge, an anual experiment that details, in an empirical fashion, a comparison among the transport modalities´ efficiency for commuting in the city, according to several measured points. Even though very significant data is collected from the challenges, they have been superficially presented to the population as it lacks an instigating and appealing visualization methods, once the reports contains just tables and simple and ungraceful bar charts. This project transformed, through graphic design, the results of the four Intermodal Challenges that have already taken place in Curitiba into interesting and user-accessible information. Setting off from a strictly numerical data set and translating it to a single data visualization capable of establish the proposed comparison, we brought awareness to the subject, aiming to interfere in a social issue that lacks elucidation.
