Description of Project: Introduction The project was born from an agreement between the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, and the person of Vera Corbelli, General Secretary of the Autorità di Bacino Nazionale dei Fiumi Liri-Garigliano e Volturno, named, with Decree of the Italian President of the Council of Ministers, Extraordinary Commissioner for urgent remediation, environmentalization and redevelopment of the territory of the City of Taranto. The aim of the agreement was to answer to the serious situations of environmental, health and socio-economic criticality, concerning the Remediation Site of National Interest in Taranto, through the acceleration of environmental remediation and the development of interventions for productive and infrastructural requalification, related to the remediation. The project carried out, nested within the WP3 (Work Project n. 3) as part of the common interest activities developed for the agreement, had as its scientific responsible and Art Director Daniela Piscitelli and saw the collaboration of two researchers, Gabriele Pontillo (computational designer), and Roberta Angari (graphic & information designer). Goals of the project The main goal of the WP3, was to structuring a strategic and integrated communication plan, aimed at communicating to the local and national population, through a dissemination language, the activities carried, with particular attention to the objectives achieved and to be achieved in the requalification plan of the Taranto area. The need to build a common idea of consensus for the activities carried out by the Government Extraordinary Commissioner, was one of the bases of the project, due to the area in which it fell, an area with high environmental, social and economic risk. Contents and strategy of the project To answer to the explained needs, we decide to start from the selection and analysis of preexistent materials, to build a "narrative inversion", through a strategic plan of communication, which could act at different communication layers, adopting different linguistic registers, and able to: - highlight the structural nature of the planned interventions, the benefits, values, and long-term projections; - valorize the Taranto area, not limited to the city area but extending this to what has been defined as a "vast area", an enlarged territory defined as a consequence to specific settlements due to industrial sites (i.e. ILVA); - enhance the excellence of the territory, both in environmental and cultural terms; - involve the local population within a shared process of social and cultural redevelopment; - build and support a local community, so that local inhabitants feel they are a proactive part of the change; - increase the sense of responsibility and awareness. The products realized, such as the "Atlas of Cartographies", an explicative and synthesis volume, an editorial series of books in pocket format, and a web newsletter led us to face some challenges, for example, restyle all the technical materials that the staff of the Commissioner, such as civil and environmental engineers, had produced before designers team became part of the project: cartographies and other communication tools (i.e. slideshow, leaflet, brochure, and newsletter) presented a too technical language, impossible to be read and understood for the community.
